Ending Day 2 unbeaten on 169, Joy was expected to surpass himself on Day 3.
However, the 25-year-old added just two more runs before being dismissed early, finishing on 171 off 286 balls, including 14 fours and 4 sixes.
Despite the solid innings, Joy expressed his disappointment over missing the milestone.
Speaking at the post-day press conference, he said, “Yes, I am a little disappointed. It could have been my first double century if I had carried through. I am a bit sad I couldn’t achieve it in the end.”
Joy last scored a fifty in 2023 and registered his maiden Test century in 2022.
While missing the double ton, he felt some satisfaction from his return to form against Ireland.
Reflecting on his innings, Joy added, “Overall, I am happy to play a big innings after a long time in the team. But if it had been a double century, it would have been even better. That’s why I feel a bit disappointed.”
