Bangladesh’s spinners controlled most of the opening day in Sylhet, but multiple missed catches allowed Ireland to reach 270 for 8 at stumps. Ireland could have been bowled out on the first day, yet Bangladesh’s fielding lapses proved costly.

Bangladesh dropped five catches on the day.

The misses came from Shadman Islam, Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Mushfiqur Rahim.

Those missed chances helped Paul Stirling and debutant Cade Carmichael convert their early reprieves into half-centuries.

Lorcan Tucker and Jordan Neill were also given lives, helping Ireland put together a fighting total.

Speaking after the day’s play, pacer Hasan Mahmud acknowledged the frustration but said the team remains positive: “Catches will be dropped, it’s part of the game. But we try to take every chance. Of course it doesn’t feel good when catches are missed, but everyone is trying. We take it as motivation to be more ready for the next opportunity.”

Hasan added that the team has been working hard on fielding, with regular catching sessions. He believes the mistakes can be reduced going forward.

On the bowling front, Miraz took three wickets, while debutant left-arm spinner Hasan Murad claimed two. Hasan Mahmud sees increasing help for the spinners as the match progresses:

“There’s good assistance for spin. As the days go on, the pitch will turn more. If the spinners stay disciplined, I believe they will win the match for us.”
