Sean Williams made a historic return to Zimbabwe’s T20I squad during the first T20I against Sri Lanka at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old rejoined the shortest format after more than a year, having previously retired from T20Is following a match against Bangladesh on May 12 last year. His recall comes ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup African Qualifiers, where Zimbabwe aim to secure a spot after missing out in 2024.

Williams etched his name in the record books by surpassing Shakib Al Hasan to become the player with the longest T20I career in history.


He is now the first cricketer to play international T20 cricket for over 18 years. Williams and Shakib had debuted in the same T20I match in 2006 when Zimbabwe faced Bangladesh.

While Shakib retired after the 2024 T20 World Cup, Williams has extended his career with this comeback.

Brendon Taylor, who debuted alongside Williams and Shakib in 2006, is also set to share this record after returning to the national T20I squad. Although 39-year-old Taylor was named in the squad for the Sri Lanka series, he missed the playing XI due to injury.
