Gibbs mocks ICC Chairman Jay Shah after India’s thrilling win over England

Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs has reignited the debate over the ICC’s push for four-day Test matches with a sharp dig at ICC chairman Jay Shah, following India’s nail-biting six-run win over England in the fifth Test at The Oval.

The Oval clash, part of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, ended in a 2-2 series draw and delivered everything that makes five-day cricket special — twists, momentum swings, and a finale that went right down to the wire. India set England a target of 374, and despite centuries from Harry Brook (111) and Joe Root (105), Mohammed Siraj’s brilliant 5/104 sealed a dramatic victory on the final morning.

Watching the contest unfold over all five days, Gibbs couldn’t resist taking a swipe at the ICC’s ongoing discussions to shorten Tests to four days, a move aimed at easing the cricket calendar.

Trials of the format have been seen before, such as South Africa vs Zimbabwe in 2017 and England vs Ireland in 2019.
“You guys wanted Test cricket to be 4 days,” Gibbs posted on X — a pointed reminder that the kind of drama seen in London might never have been possible under a shortened format.
