Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam has backed his side’s batting performance after they ended Day 1 of the second Test against Sri Lanka on 220/8 in a rain-affected day in Colombo.

Despite multiple batters getting starts, none were able to convert them into big scores, with poor shot selection costing the team.

Shadman, who top-scored with 46, was among several batters—including Mushfiqur Rahim (35), Litton Das (34), Mehidy Hasan (31), and Mominul Haque (21)—who looked set but failed to push on.
“You cannot score runs without playing shots. We played shots in Galle too where those ended in boundaries. But unfortunately, maybe it was not our day today,” Shadman said after the day’s play.

Shadman believed the slow pitch and rain breaks also disrupted rhythm; “I think the wicket was a little bit slow. There was no movement in the morning but we threw our wickets away but hopefully we won't do that in the second innings.”

“The batters need to get set again after a break. Maybe it played a role. No one wants to get out intentionally. Maybe it was a bad day for us.”
