Bangladesh denied Pathum Nissanka a well-deserved double century late on Day 3 of the first Test in Galle, but the hosts still ended the day in a commanding position.

Nissanka fell 13 runs short of a double ton, bowled by Hasan Mahmud for 187. Despite his dismissal, Sri Lanka are firmly in the contest, reaching 368 for 4 at stumps in reply to Bangladesh’s 495.

The home side now trail by just 127 runs with six wickets in hand. Kamindu Mendis (37*) and Dhananjaya de Silva (17*) remain unbeaten at the crease.
Bangladesh resumed Day 3 on 489 for 9 but managed to add only six more runs in 3.4 overs before being bowled out for 495. Nahid Rana was caught behind off Asitha Fernando for a duck, while Hasan Mahmud remained not out on 7.
Sri Lanka’s reply began with intent as openers Nissanka and Lahiru Udara capitalized on Bangladesh’s pace duo of Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana. The pair stitched together a 47-run stand before Taijul Islam struck in the 13th over, removing Udara for 29 with a return catch.

Nissanka then forged a solid 157-run partnership with Dinesh Chandimal for the second wicket. Chandimal, who scored a steady 54 off 119 balls, was dismissed by Nayeem Hasan with a catch at leg slip by Shadman Islam.

Nissanka’s sublime innings—featuring 23 boundaries and a six—was finally ended by Hasan Mahmud in the 85th over, shortly after the second new ball was taken. His 256-ball knock of 187 left Sri Lanka in a strong position to challenge Bangladesh’s total heading into Day 4.
