Hailing from Trinidad, Pooran represented the West Indies in 167 matches, becoming a cornerstone of their white-ball setup. His departure is seen as a major moment, not just due to his talent, but also because of his relatively young age and global profile.

Pooran had already opted out of the ongoing T20I series against England to recuperate after playing for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is also set to feature in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA and The Hundred in England this summer.

Cricket West Indies issued a statement praising his contributions:

“We salute his achievements and thank him for the moments he has given fans across the region and beyond. We wish him all the very best in the next phase of his journey.”

Though he follows in the footsteps of other players like Heinrich Klaasen — who also recently stepped away from internationals — Pooran’s retirement carries added weight due to his status and longevity with the team.

West Indies captain Shai Hope, when previously questioned about Pooran’s absence from the England series, had downplayed concerns, suggesting it wouldn’t impact his selection going forward. However, it has now emerged that Pooran officially informed the board of his retirement on Monday.

Pooran last wore the West Indies jersey in December 2024 during a T20 series against Bangladesh. He hasn't played an ODI since July 2023 and has never featured in Test cricket.

Notably, Pooran retires as the most capped West Indian T20I player (106 matches) and their highest T20I run-scorer, having amassed 2,275 runs in the format — a legacy that firmly cements his place in Caribbean cricket history.
