Steve Smith, serving as stand-in captain for Australia's Test team, may miss the preparatory camp in Dubai ahead of the Sri Lanka series after sustaining an elbow injury during his brief stint in Big Bash League with the Sydney Sixers.

The injury occurred while fielding during last Friday’s rain-affected match against the Sydney Thunder at the SCG.

Smith, who is set to captain Australia in the two-match Test series in Galle starting January 29 in place of regular skipper Pat Cummins, has a history of elbow issues, including surgery in 2019. However, this latest setback is reportedly unrelated to his previous injuries.

The 35-year-old had an impressive return to the BBL, scoring 121 not out and 52 in his two innings between Test commitments.
