Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has thrown down a challenge to Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed, urging him to break the long-standing world record for the fastest delivery ahead of the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

The 12th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to begin on December 26. Ahead of the tournament, Shoaib Akhtar has been appointed mentor of Dhaka Capitals.

A contract-signing ceremony was held at a five-star hotel in the capital on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, Shoaib said he wants to see Taskin bowl the fastest delivery of his career in this year’s BPL.

The former Pakistan pacer, who clocked a world-record 161.3 km/h delivery against England in the 2003 World Cup, a record that still stands, openly challenged Taskin to surpass that mark.

“I want Taskin to break my speed record,” Shoaib said.

Shoaib is currently in Bangladesh on a two-day visit and will rejoin the team once the BPL begins. Expressing his affection for the country, the former fast bowler said he was delighted to be back.

“I love this country. I’ve wanted to come to Bangladesh for a long time but couldn’t manage it. Everyone knows how much I love Bangladesh, and I’ve seen throughout my life how much Bangladesh loves me in return. Thank you very much, I’m truly happy to be here,” he added.
