Chattogram Royals picked Angelo Perera for USD 20,000 in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) auction, but the Sri Lankan all-rounder will not be joining the franchise after fracturing his thumb.

The franchise confirmed the injury in an official statement and said a replacement will be announced soon.

Once considered a future star of Sri Lanka’s batting lineup, Perera never lived up to expectations at the international level.

Despite strong performances in domestic cricket, he captained Sri Lanka in ODIs against Bangladesh in March 2013 but managed only six ODIs and six T20Is across a 12-year international career.

Perera had featured in the 2024 BPL for Sylhet Strikers but played just one match. This season was his second opportunity in the league, but the injury sustained during practice has ruled him out again. Chattogram, making their maiden BPL appearance, will now look for an immediate replacement.

At the auction, the Royals made headlines by buying Naim Sheikh for Tk 1.10 crore on the very first call. They also secured pacer Shoriful Islam for Tk 44 lakh, though they could not attract many other notable signings afterward.
