However, after thorough evaluation, the BPL Governing Council has confirmed five teams for the upcoming edition.
Among the previous franchises, Rangpur Riders and Dhaka Capitals have retained their spots. Meanwhile, Triangle Services has secured the Chattogram franchise, Nabil Group will operate the Rajshahi team, and Cricket With Sami has acquired ownership of the Sylhet franchise.
The organizers have also set tentative dates for the tournament, with the BPL expected to run from December 19 to January 16. However, the league will coincide with the ILT20 in the UAE and SA20 in South Africa, raising concerns about the availability of foreign players.
With fewer teams in the competition this year, opportunities for foreign cricketers may also be limited.
Another recurring feature of the BPL is the short-term participation of foreign players, many join for only two to four matches. That system will remain in place this year as well, according to BPL Governing Council member Iftekhar Rahman Mithu.
“Yes, franchises will still be able to bring foreign players for specific matches. Everyone wants a competitive tournament, and so do we. But with three leagues, including the ILT20, running at the same time, foreign player availability will be limited. We haven’t capped foreign registrations this time; even if a star player joins for two games, that’s a big boost for us.” Mithu explained.
