The decision comes as part of the country’s preparations to co-host the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 alongside India in February next year.
In an official statement, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board said the postponement was necessary to meet the ICC’s requirements for World Cup readiness.
All designated venues must be upgraded and fully equipped within the stipulated timeframe, prompting the board to temporarily halt the franchise league to prioritize venue enhancement work.
SLC will now focus on infrastructure development and modernization of the stadiums set to host World Cup matches, including improving facilities, expanding media centers, and upgrading broadcast capabilities to ensure they meet global standards.
Work has already begun at three key venues across the country. Construction at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, however, has been temporarily paused as it currently hosts matches of the ongoing Women’s ODI World Cup. Once the tournament concludes, renovation work will resume.
The board added that the Lanka Premier League will be rescheduled to a more convenient date after the completion of these preparations.
