Shakib stars with all-round show as Dubai Capitals win GSL opener

Shakib al Hasan in action
Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan produced a dazzling all-round performance in his Global Super League (GSL) debut, guiding Dubai Capitals to a dominant 22-run victory over New Zealand’s Central Stags.

Shakib starred with an unbeaten fifty and then returned with the ball to claim four wickets, dismantling the opposition’s chase almost single-handedly.

Opting to bat first after losing the toss at Providence Stadium in Guyana, Dubai got off to a steady start through Niroshan Dickwella and Sediqullah Atal. But Angus Schaw disrupted the flow, removing Dickwella for 15.
Captain Gulbadin Naib and Kadeem Alleyne also departed cheaply, leaving Dubai under pressure at 77 for 5.
Atal, the Afghan opener, showed promise with a quick 41 off 25 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes) before being bowled by Dean Foxcroft. It was then that Shakib took control.
Coming in at number five, the left-hander opened his account with a boundary and began rebuilding the innings cautiously. He survived a dropped catch early and made the most of it, eventually stabilizing the innings alongside Jesse Bootan.
Bootan’s 11-ball 20 helped shift momentum back before Blair Tickner dismissed him. In the later stages, Shakib found support from Dominic Drakes and accelerated toward the end, bringing up his half-century in 34 balls with a boundary off Matthew Ford.

He remained unbeaten on 58 off 37 deliveries, featuring 7 fours and a six, powering Dubai to 165 for 7 in 20 overs. Schaw was the pick of the bowlers for Central Stags, claiming 3 wickets, while Tickner took 2.

With the ball in hand, Shakib made an immediate impact. In his very first over, he struck twice — trapping Will Young (19) and Dean Foxcroft LBW within three balls. It was a dream start for the left-arm spinner, who didn’t concede a single run in that over.
Aaryaman Verma then removed Dane Cleaver, before Shakib returned in his second over to bowl Josh Clarkson, conceding just 7 runs. Though he went wicketless in his third over, he maintained tight control, giving away only 8 runs.
In his fourth and final over (17th of the innings), Shakib dismissed William Clark, bowling him cleanly, and nearly had Doug Bracewell as well — only for the LBW appeal to be turned down. He finished with exceptional figures of 4 wickets for just 13 runs in 4 overs.
The Central Stags never recovered from the early blows and eventually ended on 143 for 8 in 20 overs. Apart from Shakib’s 4-for, Ben Tanvir took 2 wickets, while Drakes and Verma chipped in with one each.
