Axar Patel named Delhi Capitals captain

India's spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals ahead of the new IPL season, the franchise announced on Friday.

The 31-year-old, who has been with the team since 2019, is its longest-serving player. Over 82 matches, he has scored 967 runs and taken 62 wickets at an economy rate of 7.09 for the Capitals.

Axar takes over the captaincy from Rishabh Pant, who has moved to Lucknow Super Giants. Earlier this year, he was also named India’s T20I vice-captain in January.

Expressing his gratitude, Axar said, "It is an absolute honor to lead Delhi Capitals, and I'm thankful to the owners and support staff for their trust in me. My time with the franchise has helped me grow both as a cricketer and as a person, and I feel ready to take on this responsibility."

He was also instrumental in India’s Champions Trophy triumph, picking up five wickets at an economy of 4.35, while also contributing with the bat at number five.
Delhi Capitals will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign in Visakhapatnam on March 24 against Lucknow Super Giants.
