Bashar: Former cricketers now keen to become coaches

A three-day coaching workshop is currently underway at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, organized by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to nurture skilled coaches within the country. The Level-A coaching course is being conducted by BCB’s Game Development Unit.
On the second day of the course, BCB’s current Head of Game Development Operations and former national captain, Habibul Bashar, spoke to reporters and expressed optimism about the growing interest in coaching as a career in Bangladesh.

“To spread cricket, it’s not enough to just play the game — being educated in cricket is also essential. Those participating in this course are primarily involved at the grassroots level. If we can train and upgrade them properly, it will ultimately benefit Bangladesh cricket. We plan to hold more seminars like this in the future.” Bashar said.
Bashar also highlighted that many former cricketers are now showing interest in taking up coaching after retiring from their playing careers — a shift he views as a positive trend for the country’s cricket.
“Quality coaching is very important, and this seminar is part of that effort. Previously, we didn’t see many cricketers keen on coaching, even five or ten years ago. But now, we’re seeing more and more players — especially those finishing their first-class careers — showing interest in entering the coaching profession.”

“We’ve received a lot of CVs for the Level One course — many from current or recently active first-class players. If we can produce quality coaches, they will surely get opportunities abroad as well. But my main focus is on how we can develop better coaches for our own cricket and improve the standard of coaching within the country” he added.
