Former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar has spoken out against what he sees as excessive and damaging criticism. Speaking to reporters in Mirpur on Sunday, Bashar said, “I hope people won’t start targeting Shanto again if he fails in the next match or two. Across formats, he is one of our top batters. His twin centuries didn’t surprise me—it’s within his capability.”
Bashar acknowledged the mounting pressure Shanto often faces, not from opponents, but from his own countrymen. “We create that pressure ourselves—through endless trolling and negative commentary. These things affect a player’s performance. It’s easy to say ‘ignore it,’ but in reality, that’s very difficult.”

“He had some technical flaws, but he’s come back strong. Scoring two centuries in a Test is a remarkable feat. Shanto has the potential to achieve even greater things—if we give him the support he needs.”

As Bangladesh continues its World Test Championship cycle, Bashar’s remarks serve as a timely reminder that behind the numbers are players who need both patience and backing—especially when they deliver on the big stage.
