Zimbabwe series underrated, but not for Shanto and co

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has failed to secure a broadcast partner for the upcoming Test series against Zimbabwe. The lack of commercial interest is being attributed to two primary reasons — it’s a Test series, and the opposition is Zimbabwe, a team that doesn’t generally attract high viewership.

However, Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto insists that the players have no room to show any lack of intent, regardless of the opposition.

Bangladesh will face Zimbabwe in the first Test of the series this Sunday at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Shanto made it clear that while fans may distinguish between ‘big’ and ‘small’ teams, professional cricketers cannot afford to do so.
“Spectators often draw comparisons, calling one team stronger or weaker. But as professionals, we think ball by ball — regardless of the opponent. The mindset, body language, and approach we show against Zimbabwe must be the same as we would against South Africa,” said the left-handed batter.
Shanto also addressed the media directly, urging them not to reinforce this “big vs small” narrative, and reiterated that the team treats all opponents equally. “We don’t make that distinction between smaller or bigger teams, and we hope the media won’t either,” he added.

Bangladesh’s recent Test record at home hasn’t been encouraging, especially with disappointing batting performances. The team also suffered a heavy defeat against India in their last Test series. But as they kick off a new red-ball season, Shanto hopes for a fresh start.

“Our batting has looked good in training. We've worked on our mistakes. This is our first Test of the year, and we want to start well. I’m hopeful the batters will perform,” Shanto said.
He also praised young pace sensation Nahid Rana, who is expected to make his Test debut in the series. “I’ve never seen Nahid bowl under 140 km/h,” Shanto remarked. “I believe he’ll bring the same pace and intensity against Zimbabwe.”
Despite the lack of external excitement surrounding the series, Shanto’s message is clear: the players are focused, motivated, and ready to deliver on the field — no matter the opponent.
