Speculations have been rife that Bangladesh national team’s three formats’ captains- Mominul Haque, Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah Riyad- have pulled them out from the leading roles of the ongoing tri-party discussion for the resumption of the Dhaka Premier League (BPL).

It’s learnt from the players’ sources that they have all decided not to stay in the leadership roles in the ongoing discussion for the resumption of the Dhaka Premier League (BPL) in the wake of the mistrust and the pressure from the general players.

Considering the magnitude of the general players’ demands, Bangladesh national team’s captains Mominul, Tamim and Riyad along with Mushfiqur Rahim and Mashrafe Bin Moratza were talking with the higher-ups of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and its Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) coupled with Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) and Dhaka Premier League (DPL) Clubs so that DPL can roll onto the ground again in August.

They all meanwhile held several discussions over the matter of resuming the unfinished DPL after the break of the highly contagious virus.

The BCB suspended DPL after its opening round games along with all types of cricketing competitions and activities across the country for an indefinite period owing to the life-threatening coronavirus pandemic that infected 20 more lakh people and caused five lakh deaths across the world.

The CWAB, a platform of the cricketers, took initiatives to hold discussion so that the board can resume the league mitigating the distance between the concerned authorities and the players after the magnitude of the country’s corona situation is over.

The players, who mostly depend on the league as they put their annual income from it, were giving urgency to start the league after a long break so that they do not face any difficulty from financial aspects round the year.

In the meantime, the speed of the discussion abruptly slowed down in the aspects of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Nazmul Islam Apu and Nafees Iqbal’s corona-infection. The current and former captains told the players to stay alert at home for which the discussion took a new turn for which the general players alleged they have lack of integrity and lost their trust in them.

On receiving such allegations and mistrust on them, the senior cricketers are saying, “Brothers, do whatever you all discuss. We are no longer in it”.

Initially, the discussion was going on among the related parties so that cricket can be returned to the field with DPL after the Eid-ul-Adha. But it did not seem ‘possible’ to resume it before September-October in view of the country’s corona situation.

The general cricketers are blaming the stars players for this sudden change in decision. They are now alleging that they had a lack of integrity in efforts for which it has poured cold water on the interests of the officials concerned.

Being disappointed for the disunity and mistrust among the players, the annoyed star cricketers walked out from the leadership roles of the ongoing discussion. They have lost interest in leading this discussion. And so, Mushfiqur flatly said, “We don’t want to play, who said, when everyone is at home, I am going to the field”.

Mushfiqur is regularly visiting the grounds of Fortis Football Academy. Like him, three captains have given up and told the cricketers to understand their role if possible. If they can convince the officials then let them know and if they will play in the Premier League or not they will decide it later.

Last October, everyone from ordinary cricketers to stars united under one umbrella and protested against the cricket board. Within years of the incident, there was a rift in the mutual trust between the cricketers. The rift was so big that the captains and senior players stepped them out from the discussions.
