Bangladesh pace bowler Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi expressed his apprehension, stating that he turns to be an ordinary fast bowler over the ban on use of saliva and sweat to shine the ball.

Jayed has been playing for the Tigers as a regular Test bowler whose main strength is swing bowling, the thing that made him different from other bowlers in Bangladesh.

“Without swing, I could turn into an ordinary bowler,” Abu Jayed Chowdhury said.

“If the ball loses its shine, soon it will lack the swinging ability and in flat tracks the batsmen will remain unchallenged from the bowlers,” Rahi told a leading English newspaper.

Even though the ICC still have not approved any substitute of saliva and sweat to shine the ball in the teeth of the fast bowlers across the globe but the Tigers’ fast bowler feels that they need to invent an alternative option to shine the ball.

“Some sort of alternative should be introduced to use as shiner because it’s an important part of the game. From the very second over of the bowling innings, I decided with my bowling partner about maintaining the shine. We discuss which side to keep shiny and which side to keep rough,” the right-arm pace bowler said.

“So when the shiny part gets scratched or something, we use saliva to clean up the dirt and keep the surface shining,” he added.

Jayed was now passing idle time at his home in Sylhet, which might be fallen in ‘red-zone’ area as the number of COVID-19 cases was increasing every day and talks of resuming practice was making him anxious.

“I’ve heard that BCB is opening up facilities in Dhaka, Sylhet and some other places for individual training. But I’m in a dilemma,” he said.

“As the government is repetitively telling us to stay at home, how could I join the training? BCB might open the practice facilities but if the government imposes the renewed lockdown over the city, how can I go?” he added.
