we lacked variety in our squad- Gibbs

Sylhet Thunders head coach Herschelle Gibbs said on Wednesday that he missed all-rounder in the squad.
Thunders won only one game so far and they are eliminated from the tournament but according to the South African, there was a lack of variety in his team that made them pay dearly.

‘’I was not at the draft. I was basically handed a squad. If I was at the draft, I would obviously look at a couple of top left-handed batsmen, some more left armed seamers. That’s the squad I was given. As a coach, I need to look- I am going to put the pressure on the opposition. So when we play, the opposition will see, we only have left-handed batsman,’’ said Gibbs
‘’So for the bowlers, it is a lot easier to put pressure on our batsmen because we only have right-handed batsmen. You never see a squad of players without one left-handed batsman. I mean, it is like that standard that you should have. At least two in your top six so that you can put pressure on the opposition bowlers. I don’t have that. It is been difficult, so if the guys mentally don’t read the situation, and you don’t have the partnership upfront, then it is difficult to put even more pressure on the second half of the batting. Because there is no other variety,’’ he said.
‘’We got left armed spinners and right armed spinners, unfortunately, the ball has not been turning, the wickets have been great. So it makes a difference, you got left armed spinner or right armed spinner. It is your variety of pace and their lines and lengths that you bowl, spinning. You see the real quality of a spinner when the balls are not turning. So that all creates creativity at the end of the day. Is where I said to them, that’s where they need to improve,’’ he said.
‘’And in all the spinners, lots of the spinners have gone for runs. Because the wickets have been so good. Someone like Rashid Khan, he does well in the wickets that don’t turn. That’s nice to be able to say that. because then you see the real quality of the spinners, when it is not turning,’’ he added.
I only had right-hand batsmen, I need them to exceed my grands, otherwise, it is no pressure on anybody. So it is unfortunate, but that is the squad that was I dealt with. But hopefully, after these next couple of games, they can actually, sit and think about it, where they need to improve skill-wise. Just the understanding of reading the situations better on the field. That is why the guys at the bottom are there. Because they just don’t apply the pressure to absorb the pressure when they need it.
