Despite the promise of a thrilling contest, defending champions Fortune Barishal, touted as the strongest team on paper in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), suffered a comprehensive 8-wicket defeat against Rangpur Riders.

Led by Nurul Hasan Sohan, Rangpur extended their unbeaten streak to three matches, with standout performances from Khushdil Shah, Saif Hassan, and Alex Hales.

Barishal’s star-studded lineup, featuring Tamim Iqbal, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Mohammad Nabi, faltered with both bat and ball.

After winning the toss, Barishal struggled to build momentum, managing just 124 runs before being bowled out in 18.2 overs.

Tamim provided a glimmer of hope early on, scoring a quick 28 off 18 balls with five boundaries and a six. However, the rest of the batting order crumbled under Rangpur’s disciplined bowling. Shanto (9), Towhid Hridoy (4), and Kyle Mayers (13) failed to make significant contributions.

Mohammad Nabi’s 21-run cameo was the only other notable effort, as Khushdil Shah’s 3 for 18 and Iftikhar Ahmed’s 2 for 10 dismantled Barishal’s lineup.

Rangpur’s chase got off to a shaky start, losing two wickets for just 15 runs. Azizul Haque Tamim, making his BPL debut, fell for a golden duck, while Toufiq Khan was dismissed for zero in the same over.

However, Alex Hales and Saif Hassan steadied the innings, forging an unbeaten 113-run partnership to seal victory with 30 balls to spare.

Hales played a composed knock of 49 off 41 balls, hitting three sixes and four boundaries, while Saif dazzled with an unbeaten 62 off 46 balls, showcasing his range of drives and pull shots. His innings included six fours and three sixes.

Barishal’s young pacer Iqbal Hossain Imon started brightly with two wickets in his first over but later proved expensive, conceding 41 runs in his three overs. In contrast, Rangpur’s bowlers, particularly Khushdil Shah and Nahid Rana, maintained their grip on the game.
