Shamim Hossain celebrates with teammates during first T20I
Batter Shamim Hossain marked his return to the Bangladesh team after a year with a crucial innings that played a significant role in the team’s victory. Now, the 24-year-old batter aims to carry the momentum from the first match into a series triumph.
Shamim’s contribution in the first game was small in length but impactful in context. He smashed a quickfire 27 off 13 balls, showcasing his aggressive style of play. His cameo, along with a 29-ball 49-run partnership with Mahedi Hasan, lifted Bangladesh from a slow scoring rate to a competitive total of 147/6.
The left-hander, known as a “T20 specialist” in Bangladesh cricket, had been sidelined since December last year following a poor outing in New Zealand. Prior to that, Shamim had shown glimpses of his talent with solid performances against Afghanistan and Ireland.
In a video message released by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Shamim expressed his satisfaction at seizing the opportunity on his return.
“It feels great to be back after a year. This innings was very important for me and the team. I was confident that I could contribute something positive to the team.”
Shamim came to the crease after 15 overs when Bangladesh were struggling at a run rate just above six. His explosive innings helped push the team close to the 150-run mark, which eventually proved decisive in the narrow victory.
“Given the situation and the nature of the pitch, I knew I had to score quickly. My plan was simple: to get runs on the board and take the team to a good position,” Shamim said.
With Bangladesh leading the three-match series 1-0, Shamim emphasized the team’s focus on clinching the series.
“Since we have won the first match, we are ahead now. Our goal is to win the series. We know West Indies are T20 specialists and a very strong team, but hopefully, we can win the next game and seal the series.”
