Bangladesh’s aspiration to restrict Zimbabwe cheaply in the second innings received a setback as the visitors kept them on course of setting a big target at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

The tourists reached 91 -2 at lunch on day three, stretching their lead to 230. Bangladesh’s successful chase in fourth innings remains 217 against West Indies at St Georges in 2009.

Bangladesh’s highest fourth innings total however is 413 against Sri Lanka that came in a losing-cause.

However Captain Hamilton Masakadza was batting on 39 with Sean Williams on 16 by the first interval of the day.

Offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraj gave Bangladesh an early breakthrough, dismissing opener Brain Chari for 4 to give the hosts a hope to fight back.

But Brendan Taylor counterattacked in a bid to keep Bangladesh’s spinners at bay.

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam ended Taylor’s attacking knock by inducing him to play a big shot, resulting a catch at long-on where Kayes kept him balance to hold on.

Taylor scored 24 off 25, hitting four boundaries.

Masakadza and Williams then saw the side safely through to the session.

Bangladesh was bowled out for 143 in the first innings, its seventh successive Test innings below 200, in reply of Zimbabwe’s 282.
