Bangladesh and West Indies set to lock horns in T20 series opener

On Wednesday (August 1), Bangladesh will face West Indies at the same venue (Warner Park) where they faced their first defeat against the Caribbean side in T20 format in 2009.

The Tigers have five players (Shakib, Tamim, Mushfiqur, Mahmudullah, Rubel) in the squad who had featured in that game nine years ago. However, despite having a core group of players that has been serving the nation for a decade now, Bangladesh can’t really guarantee total dominance over the West Indian team that has only one player (Andre Fletcher) who was part of the T20I side in 2009.

Although Chris Gayle has been rested, West Indies won’t face much difficulties as their side is filled with players who are capable of challenging any team in the 20-over format. Bangladesh could still hope for a good display against the reigning World T20 champions after enjoying success in the ODI series.

West Indies will be desperate to secure a series victory in the limited-overs leg of Bangladesh’s tour, especially after losing both of their last two T20I series to New Zealand and Pakistan.

Bangladesh have had a mixed experience in T20Is this year suffering a clean sweep against Sri Lanka in a home series and then qualifying for the Nidahas Trophy final in Sri Lanka, with the latest being another whitewash against Afghanistan. They will surely look to end the series on a positive note and restore their reputation in the format.

The hosting side is likely to make one change in the eleven from their last T20I match, against the World XI. Rovman Powell is likely to enter the playing eleven in place of Gayle.

On the other hand, Bangladesh are expected to make two changes in the playing eleven from their last T20 encounter. Mustafizur Rahman has returned to the T20I side and he could replace Abu Jayed in the team while Sabbir Hasan’s recent form could cost his place in the team and result in Mehidy Hasan being included in the eleven.

West Indies (Predicted XI): Carlos Brathwaite (c), Keemo Paul, Ashley Nurse, Samuel Badree, Kesrick Williams, Evin Lewis, Andre Fletcher, Marlon Samuels, Denesh Ramdin, Rovman Powell, and Andre Russell.

Bangladesh (Predicted XI): Shakib Al Hasan(c), Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Mahmudullah Riyad, Ariful Haque, Mehidy Hasan, Abu Hider Rony, Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman.
