Age is just a number for Shahriar Nafees

Bangladesh batsman Shahriar Nafees is positive about his performance and thinks that the team management should consider giving more chances to the senior cricketers.
Bangladesh have had a trend of dropping players after they became 30 years old as a method of giving opportunities to the young players. After Abdur Razzak got a national call-up after four years, at the age of 35, the cricketers around the country are hopeful about getting a chance based on their performance.
Shahriar reportedly said, “I believe that we, the senior cricketers, have no lacking in our performance. I am trying to keep fit and perform in domestic cricket.”
“We are always prepared to act whenever the team needs us. The rest depends on the team selection.

“We have seen Bangladesh perform well for the last few years under Hathurusingha and he did not want to bring much change to the team. As a player, my work is to keep performing and scoring runs.”
According to Nafees, giving opportunities to young talents is okay, but the young players should also get enough time to mature their raw talent.
He stated, “If we want to climb the ladders [of international cricket], then senior cricketers or experienced cricketers have to be in the team.
“One might get a taste of the limelight after playing in U-19 but it takes another five to six years to understand his own game. But the consistent performance comes only after getting 30 years old. We understand it and that is the reason why we are performing well in domestic cricket. So the selectors have to come to the seniors. If a young team plays all the time, it will be difficult to get results every once in a while.”
Shahriar Nafees seems to agree with the popular belief – ‘age is just a number’. He said that age should not be a problem if a player is fit and performing well.
“Actually age doesn’t matter. If you are fit and performing well, then age should not be an obstacle. There is a difference if a 20-year-old is unfit but a 35-year-old is fit and performing at the same time. We hope this trend [of giving chances to elderly players] will be introduced in our country. It’ll be good for us if we start that,” Nafees explained.
