‘The fewer, the merrier,’ implies Habibul Bashar

Bangladesh cricket is going through a change of sorts. In
any other nation, this might have been a cause of worry since the World Cup is
only over a year away and the team doesn’t have a coach or a full-strength
selection panel.
With the departure of Chandika Hathurusingha and the sacking
of Sajjad Ahmed from the selector’s panel role, Bangladesh are now with a coach
and a third member of the selection panel. However, according to former
Bangladesh captain and member of the two-man selection committee, Habibul
Bashar, it is not a problem.
“The selectors normally select the squad as we now have
Nannu bhai (Minhajul Abedin) and me in the committee so we are doing our job as
we used to do before. There is no difference when it comes to the selection
process after the resignation of Hathurusingha.”

Minhajul Abedin is currently leading the selection panel
which, according to reports, could be hiring another person to make it a 4-man
team when Khaled Mahmud’s role of team director for home series is considered.
However, for now, the selection committee for the tri-nation
series is likely to comprise of these two figures only. The preliminary squad
for the tri-nation and Sri Lanka series will be announced on or after the 23rd
December—the day the National Cricket League concludes.
The 30-man squad is most likely to have Mohammad Mithun in
it after his fine displays in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League. After the
terrible form of both Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes, the selectors could do a
lot worse than giving the wicketkeeper-batsmen a chance.
