India can win in South Africa, claims Kohli

Winning in South Africa is a dream for a lot of Indians. After all, they have had to face a lot of embarrassment from the hands of the Proteas in the latter’s home ground. And now, with India once again travelling to South Africa for a series, skipper Virat Kohli thinks that his side have a chance to disrupt Faf du Plessis and his men.

Indeed, he believes that the current team has better bowlers than the team that drew the series back in 2010-11. As a result, there is a chance for the Asian giants.

“Our best result here has been a drawn series in 2010-11 but I feel the kind of bowling attack we have now and the balance we have in the side, we definitely can win here,” Kohli said in a press conference.

“There are no two ways about it.”

India, who are currently preparing for the Test against South Africa that begins on Friday, have to believe in their potential and play according to it, opines the captain. He also doesn’t believe in dwelling in the past and prefers to focus on the now.

“We come here wanting to express ourselves, believing in our abilities and knowing we have the right balance to win test matches under any conditions we play under.

“This is an opportunity for us to play good cricket. We aren’t thinking about the history of past series in South Africa but concentrating on winning each session and executing our strategy well.

“I think international cricket is all about staying in the present and trying to do things better than your opposition at all times.

“If we didn’t have that mindset, there would be no point getting on to the flight to come here.” ‘

India are now the ranked one Test side in the world. They have won their last 9 Tests series on a row—stretching back to August 2015—and are a force to be reckoned with in the longest format of the game. However, their record against the Proteas is woeful.

Indeed, in their 17 Test matches against South Africa away from home, they have only ever won twice and have lost 5 out of the 6 series played there, with the 2010-11 being their best effort as they managed to draw the series.

And Kohli admits that the tracks in South Africa will be different from the ones back in India, but the team is prepared. He claims that the batsmen are fully aware of the bounce and pace of the wicket, so they will have to take the match ball-by-ball.

“We come to South Africa knowing the wickets are going to be different from those back home. We are under no illusions but we are ready for it.

“Last time we were here there was a lot of talk about our batsmen being bounced out but we stood up rather nicely.

“The most important thing is not to get surprised by the pace and bounce. It is going to be much quicker and much more bouncy than back home and you will get balls that will surprise you every now and then, so the most important thing is to focus on the game ball by ball.”

He then stressed that the batsmen did the very same thing the last time and will just have to repeat that this time around.

“That’s something we did last time. You can’t afford to worry about the pace and bounce, you have to believe in your abilities and take it head-on. That’s key to playing in conditions that are different from your own,” the second-ranked Test batsman added.

In a tour that runs for two months, India will face the Proteas in 3 Tests, 6 ODI and 3 T20I encounters.
