Domingo to be appointed Tigers coach if Hesson doesn't arrive Saturday

South African Russel Domingo is the front runner to be the next head coach of Bangladesh if New Zealander Mike Hesson fail to arrive on Saturday, said Bangladesh Cricket Board sources.
Domingo, who had given an interview on August 7, is leading the race following the latest development in Indian cricket as retained Ravi Shastri as the head coach of senior men’s cricket team up to 2021, leaving the door open for Bangladesh to renegotiate with former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson for the post.
Hesson, the first choice candidate of Bangladesh to replace Steve Rhodes, was short-listed by India, along with incumbent Shastri, former Australian cricketer Tom Moody, former Indian players Lalchand Rajput and Robin Singh.
An advisory committee of Board of Control for Cricket in India, comprising cricket great Kapil Dev, former cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad and ex-women’s captain Shanta Rangaswamy, conducted interviews for the post on Friday and unanimously agreed to retain Shastri.
A BCCI statement, following the interviews, confirmed Hesson came just behind Shastri in the pecking order, which appeared to have relived his other potential suitors Bangladesh and Pakistan, with the latter is also now without a coach having shown the door to South African Mickey Arthur.
‘’We have to play our cards carefully and at the moment we have to consider everything carefully,’’ said the official indicating they are not very keen to spend the huge amount of sum demanded by the Kiwis.
Bangladesh are also linked with former South African coach Russell Domingo, former Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur, former West Indies opener Phil Simmons and former Zimbabwean opener Grant Flower.
Domingo appeared for a BCB interview on August 7 and is now the frontrunner to take the job.
The BCB is facing a race to name the coach with a home Test match against Afghanistan and a tri-nation Twenty20 tournament looming large. Afghanistan will arrive on August 30 to play one-off Test from September 5-9. The tri-series Twenty20 tournament is scheduled from September 13-24.
Bangladesh are without a coach since mid-July after the BCB parted ways with Englishman Rhodes following the Tigers eighth place finish in the World Cup.
Former national captain Khaled Mahmud took the interim charge during a three-match one-day international series in Sri Lanka but failed to inspire the team.
Following a 3-0 debacle in Sri Lanka, the BCB, who rushed to name the head coach only to be impeded by other countries, who have the similar urgency.
Apart from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, South Africa, Afghanistan are also looking now coach for the national team while the position of England head coach will also fall vacant after the ongoing Ashes series.
