‘Mashrafe will return, should he feel the necessity’

Bangladesh bowling coach Courtney Walsh has started a training camp for the fast-bowlers. This camp consists of 14 pacers which also includes the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, and Taskin Ahmed.

Walsh reportedly said, "We are working on the mental side of bowling in the camp. They have to back themselves and keep it simple. In my assessment, that's what has happened in the last series. The guys went a little bit over the top in terms of trying a bit too hard.

“They have to know what best to do in a situation and how to execute it. If they get the consistency, eight out of ten times it will work in your favor. We are trying to get them to be consistent and remain relaxed with the execution."

Following a disappointing start in this year, BCB president Nazmul Hasan ordered a special training camp for the pace bowlers. Bangladesh lost three series against Sri Lanka, including a tri-nation series. They have to turn things around if they want a positive outcome in the upcoming Nidahas Trophy that is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka and also involve India alongside the hosts.

"We haven't bowled as consistently as we would have liked so this camp is to focus on that. They have to understand their roles in the upcoming tour.

"The camp is also to make them know what fast bowling is all about, and the hard work that is required. It is a combination of both. We are trying to keep it simple. We are focused on the consistency, working on the skill-set and get a better understanding of it," said Walsh.

There are six uncapped quicks in the camps who have previously featured in BPL. Walsh is looking forward to assigning duties to the newcomers according to their skills.

"It is the first time I am seeing some of these guys properly," he stated. "To look at them today was to assess them and see what they have. Over the next few days, we will be doing specific work on individuals. They have to improve their departments.”

Bangladesh could only scalp a total of 8 wickets in the recently concluded two-T20I series against the island nation. According to the Jamaican, the Tigers should forget those horrible defeats and move on to make things better in future.

“[We] need to forget the previous two series. It’ll be more challenging in Sri Lanka. We must be prepared. Playing as a team is very important. One must apply skill according to his responsibility in the team.”

Regarding Mashrafe’s much-talked return to T20Is, Walsh said the matter depends on the selectors and Mashrafe himself.

“Mashrafe’s return is in the hands of the management. But I know Mashrafe is very intelligent. And if he thinks that he has a lot to offer to his country, then he will take the right decision.

“However, cricketers like Mashrafe are not made overnight. If I see the possibility of anyone going to that level, I will work with them,” Walsh concluded.
