Bangladesh’s hopes of direct qualification for the ICC Women’s World Cup remain slim, but their performance in the first ODI against West Indies has made the path even more challenging. Nigar Sultana Joty’s team suffered a crushing 9-wicket defeat in the opening match of the three-match series.

Batting first after losing the toss, Bangladesh managed only 198 runs, a target the hosts chased down with 110 balls to spare. West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews led from the front, delivering a match-winning all-round performance. She claimed 2 wickets with the ball before smashing an unbeaten 104 off 93 balls, laced with 16 boundaries.

Matthews was well-supported by Kycia Joseph, who scored 70 off 79 balls before being dismissed by Rabeya Khan. Shamaine Campbelle then joined Matthews to see the team home with her unbeaten 14 off 18 balls.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s innings got off to a shaky start, losing opener Fargana Hoque for just 25 runs. Murshida Khatun (40 off 53 balls) and Sharmin Akhter (42 off 70 balls) tried to stabilize the innings but failed to convert their starts into big scores.

Sobhana Mostary (35 off 50 balls) and Swarna Akter (29 off 38 balls) chipped in with useful contributions, but the rest of the batting lineup faltered against the West Indies bowlers. Deandra Dottin was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3 wickets, while Matthews and Aaliyah Alleyne took 2 wickets each. Afi Fletcher also added one wicket to her name.

Despite this loss, Bangladesh still has a chance to qualify directly for the Women’s World Cup. Winning the next two matches will guarantee their spot, while even a single victory could keep their hopes alive. The pressure now mounts on the Tigresses as they look to bounce back in the remaining games of the series.
