Cricket Australia faces major financial crisis amid coronavirus pandemic

Chief Executive of Cricket Australia [CA] Kevin Roberts told to Australian local media that their staff that the governing body is facing a financial crisis and will not be able to pay its bills at the end of August without layoffs.


Earlier on Thursday CA had announced their plans to lay off almost 80 per cent of staff on, putting them on 20% pay until June 30.


On Thursday, CA said in a statement that the impact of coronavirus is bigger in the sports industry. Also, they are working proactively to manage this impact.


“impacts on the sports industry of the coronavirus pandemic are bigger than anyone sport,” CA had said in a statement.

“We are conscious of the impact this will have on Australian Cricket and are working hard to manage that proactively.


“We will continue to seek advice from medical experts and relevant government agencies to ensure the health and safety of our people, volunteers and communities, and to return to business as soon as possible.”


The coronavirus has infected more than 6,500 people in Australia and killed 65.


Due to coronavirus pandemic all sports event around the world has been postponed, as well as the fixtures of Aussies also.


The first ODI match against New Zealand was played behind closed doors at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 13 March, where the last two were postponed.



However, CA is expecting to host two big revenue gathering from this years Twenty20 World Cup which is scheduled to be played in October and November and the four-Test match series against India around the eve of New Year.  


If those two events get shut down due to coronavirus then that would be a huge financial blow for Cricket Australia.


Thought The Aussie coach Justin Langer said on Friday that he is now a part-time employee, the players have not yet concluded negotiations over any wage losses they might suffer.


The players retained a revenue share model with Cricket Australia in their last negotiations over pay in 2017 and test captain Tim Paine said last month that he and his teammates were braced for cuts.
