Pakistan cricket is currently going through a turbulent phase, with on-field struggles compounded by instability and controversial decisions off the field.
Mushtaq, who currently works as Bangladesh's spin bowling coach, said he would be willing to serve his country again if the right environment could be created.
Speaking on the BBC's Stumped podcast, Mushtaq said he was particularly concerned about the lack of respect and security for coaches.
“Of course, I want to work for my country, especially at this time. I only need one thing. Sometimes you are scared to work for your own country when people don't respect you and sack you because of emotional decisions,” he said.
Mushtaq was referring to the PCB's recent decision to remove head coach Sarfraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul in the middle of Pakistan's ongoing tour of England, following defeats in the first two Tests. Seven players were also sent home, with five of their replacements having no Test experience.
The former leg-spinner said the decision to dismiss coaches during a tour was particularly troubling.
“When you see coaches being sacked during a tour, you become concerned and scared. I think they should have at least shown some courtesy and waited until the end of the series,” Mushtaq said.
Despite his concerns, the 56-year-old believes many Pakistani coaches would be eager to serve the national team if the situation improved.
“If these things can be put right, then not only me, but every Pakistani working in coaching would want to serve the country. For me, this is the best time to take on the challenge, bring these players back to their best form and make them confident again in international cricket,” he added.
Mushtaq has extensive experience with Pakistan's national setup, having served as bowling consultant from 2014 to 2016 before returning as the team's spin bowling coach in 2020, a role he held until 2022.
