Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has stressed the importance of posting big first-innings totals as Bangladesh look to improve their home record in the World Test Championship.

Bangladesh endured a disappointing campaign at home in the previous WTC cycle, managing just one victory in six Tests. Batting struggles proved to be the biggest concern, with the team crossing the 300-run mark only once during that period.

Ahead of the first Test against Pakistan, Shanto made it clear that strong batting performances will be crucial to building winning positions.

“We need to bat well in the first innings consistently. If we can score more than 400 runs, it will be very good for the team,” Shanto said at a press conference on Thursday.

“However, I don’t want anyone to change their natural game. If we score 400 in 80 overs, that’s fine. If it takes 120 overs, that’s also fine with me. Scoring runs is what matters most,” he added.

Bangladesh’s current batting lineup features several experienced players, with most members of the squad having played at least 20 Tests. Only Tanzid Hasan and Amit Hasan are relatively inexperienced at the highest level.

While many of those Tests came overseas, Shanto believes it is now time for the batters to make full use of home conditions in Mirpur.

The Bangladesh skipper also expressed optimism over the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium pitch, saying recent white-ball matches showed signs of improvement compared to the past.

“The Mirpur wicket has improved in recent white-ball cricket compared to before. Hopefully, the batters will be able to express themselves better this time,” he said.
