Although Mustafizur may end up being the lone Bangladeshi cricketer in the upcoming IPL season, his inclusion has already sparked controversy.
Kolkata Knight Riders have come under criticism from sections of fans and even some political figures on social media for signing the left-arm pacer at the IPL 2026 auction, against the backdrop of strained ties between the two countries.
Despite the backlash, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has no plans to bar Bangladeshi players from the league. Instead, the board is taking a cautious approach and is awaiting any formal guidance from the Indian government.
“We have to understand that it is a delicate situation. We have always been in touch with the government regarding evolving diplomatic situations and haven’t received any information that would prompt us to ban players from Bangladesh. So yes, Mustafizur will play in IPL. Bangladesh is not an enemy nation,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.
Earlier this year, the BCCI had deferred India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh following instructions from the government, citing the prevailing political environment and the perceived anti-India posture of the current Bangladeshi administration.
The situation in Bangladesh has remained volatile since the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, with multiple incidents of violence reported.
