Bangladesh suffered a narrow defeat against South Africa in a tense, low-scoring match at the T20 World Cup, losing by just 4 runs at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Monday.

Chasing a modest target of 114, Bangladesh managed to score only 109-7, allowing South Africa to secure their third consecutive win in Group D.

A controversial DRS decision played a pivotal role in Bangladesh's loss. On the second ball of the 17th over, Mahmudullah, batting on 15 runs, was declared out lbw by on-field umpire Sam Nogajski off the bowling of Ottneil Baartman.

The ball, which deflected off Mahmudullah's pads, rolled to the fine leg boundary. However, because the umpire had given him out, the ball was deemed dead, costing Bangladesh four crucial runs. The decision was later overturned by DRS, as the ball was shown to be heading down the leg side, but the lost boundary proved decisive.

Former Bangladesh U-19 batting coach Wasim Jaffer highlighted this incident after the match, expressing sympathy for Bangladesh fans and emphasizing the impact of the controversial call on the game's outcome.

“Mahmudullah was wrongly given out LBW, the ball went for four leg byes. The decision was reversed on DRS. Bangladesh didn't get the 4 runs as ball is dead once batter given out, even if wrongly. And SA ended up winning the game by 4 runs. Feel for Bangladesh fans.” Wasim Jaffer wrote on X.

Despite a valiant effort from their bowlers, particularly Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Taskin Ahmed, who restricted South Africa to 113/6, Bangladesh couldn't capitalise fully in their chase.
