‘Costly’ Mustafiz gets 300 T20 wickets as CSK suffer first defeat in IPL 2024

Chennai Super Kings suffered their first defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) as Delhi Capitals beat them by 20 runs at Visakhapatnam.


Mustafizur Rahman could not shine against Delhi despite reaching 300 wickets in recognized T20 cricket on Sunday. He took a wicket and leaked 47 runs in his allotted four overs.


Mustafiz gave away 18 runs in his first over as he came to bowl in the last over of the power play. David Warner welcomed him with a four. Prithvi Shaw hit three consecutive fours after getting a strike.


In his next over, Mustafiz turned around brilliantly. Delhi's 93-run opening partnership broke with Warner’s wicket and Mustafiz completed his 300 wickets.


The third ball of the 10th over was bowled by Mustafiz slower outside the off stump. Warner played the reverse scoop. Matheesha Pathirana took a marvelous catch with one hand at short third man. Mustafiz finished the over with just 4 runs.


He became the second bowler of Bangladesh to take these much wickets in T20. The country's best all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has 482 wickets in this edition.

He was then brought into the attack again in the 18th over. Rishabh Pant hit one six and four each. 14 runs came from that over. Mustafiz could not give his best even in the last over of his quota, conceded 12 runs in that over.


Warner and Pant played well on Mustafiz's bad day. The Australian opener scored 52 runs off 35 balls with 3 sixes and 5 fours.


India's keeper-batsman scored 51 runs off 32 balls with 3 sixes and four fours. Pant got the taste of fifty in the third match after returning to the field after a terrible road accident, while Prithvi Shaw scored 27-ball 43.


After winning the toss and chose to bat, Delhi scored 191 for five wickets.


Chennai, who witnessed a captaincy change at the start of the season when the 42-year-old M.S. Dhoni handed over the leadership to Ruturaj Gaikwad, lost two early wickets including Rachin Ravindra for two.


Ajinkya Rahane (45) and Daryl Mitchell (34) put on 68 runs in their attempt to revive the chase but the duo's departure saw wickets fall in clusters.


The fans in the south Indian city largely represented Chennai as they chanted  (Dhoni) "Dhoni, Dhoni" -- the former skipper obliging with an unbeaten 37 off 16 balls, including four fours and three sixes.



Delhi restricted Chennai to 171-6 for their first win of the season and hand their opponents a loss after two opening victories.


Khaleel Ahmed returned bowling figures of 2-21 and Mukesh Kumar took three wickets.
