Bangladesh chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu mulled Test cricket as the prelude to the success of other formats and said his selection panel would emphasize more on this format to help players thrive in other formats.

He said in a bid to become successful in cricket’s traditional format in which Bangladesh often remain vulnerable, they brought up some quality changes that largely went unnoticed to the people.

Having said that, he revealed they would emphasize more on this format in their new tenure. Even though Bangladesh’s target is to do well in next World T20 in Australia in 2020, Nannu said it is imperative to do well in Test format to hone the skill for the cricket’s newest version.

“It’s not that we will just focus only T20 cricket. We will primarily focus on the Test format. Test cricket is best format for a cricketer, then ODI and then T20. If you can play well in Test format, you can thrive in any other format,” he said here on Sunday, emphasizing the importance of the longer version format.

The selectors and team management however always talk about Test cricket but still there is no significant success in this format.

Nannu differed with that saying the progress is visible even though it’s not rapid. He said the people didn’t notice some significant changes that his panel brought in country’s domestic first class cricket.

The chief selector said the changes they brought up in the first class structure will pay dividends in coming days.

“Apart from forming the national team, we have other duties too. We have to look after first class cricket and aged level cricket,” he said.

“We have to devise plan for first class cricket. People don’t know many things but don’t hesitate to criticize us. Perhaps you people also don’t know that new ball has been taken after 80 overs from last season in the domestic first class cricket in accordance with the Test cricket. We the selectors first did it in domestic cricket.”

“We also planned to what will be the point system and development system in domestic first class cricket. We have set a fitness standard for all players in first class cricket what not many people know. No selection panel did those jobs in the past but we did it. That’s why you will see the fitness level of the players in Test cricket now improved. The result will follow gradually.”

While many people think that different squad for different formats will be viable for Bangladesh team, Nannu said it is not possible at this moment.

“It’s not possible to form separate squad at this moment. We still have to rely on the established players. We have to increase the players flow in the pipeline to materialize this. At this moment we are playing ODI cricket more and that’s why we have good players pipeline for ODI format. We are not playing Test cricket and T20 cricket that much, so we have some lack. Hopefully when we started playing those two formats more, we’ll get more players.”
