Yesterday Malinga and Mumbai won their fourth IPL trophy. They clinched just one run victory over M.S Dhoni’s Chennai. Malinga defended just 9 runs in the final over and 2 runs in his final bowl. Rohit sharma took reporters through the last over when asked in the press conference, He said: We decided to go for the slower bowl.

“when this type of situation comes both the bowler and batsman are under pressure. In that moment what you decide is very important. We didn’t want to take it to the super over, we wanted to get him out. I have played with Shardul Thakur for a long time, so I knew he was trying to hit big. So, we decided to bowl the slower bowl and hoped for a top edge. Again it could have gone either way, he could have middle the bowl and cleared the ground also “ He quoted.

“ In these moments you have to brave, so we decided to go for the slower bowl , no matter what happens. “ He added.

But when Rohit gave the final over to Malinga it raised few eye brows because Malinga had gone for 42 runs in his three overs, so many people thought that Malinga is not the man that can do the job today for Rohit. But Rohit placed his faith on the veteran shoulder of Malinga and he delivered the goods.

“when decision comes off it looks all nice but it can backfire also. At that stage I wanted to go with experience because  I wanted somebody who has been in this situation before. Malinga has been in this type of situation millions time in his career, defending 5 runs or 10 runs.  So, we backed him to do that. I clearly remember at 2017 Johnson defended 10 runs in the last over. So, sometimes you have to trust your instinct. “  He told.

But the interesting fact is that at first Malinga didn’t want to play in this year’s IPL , he wanted to take preparation for the world cup and now he is the hero of it
