‘You can't just flick a switch and become a winning team’

Teams from outside the subcontinent have failed to crack the spin riddle many a time and West Indies was no different when they capitulated to Bangladesh’s spin quartet in a two-match Test series.
West Indies coach Nic Pothas expects the spin-bowling to remain a factor in the ODI series as well given the conditions. However, he believes that the players, who are indeed capable of facing the challenge that international cricket poses, will handle the pressure irrespective of the venue.

He said: “I think it would be pretty naive to say that spin is not going to be a factor when you are in Bangladesh. In the subcontinent, spin is going to be a factor. So what we do need to look at is the process moving forward.
“We'll wait and see, but what I will say is that there has been a lot of work done. The players are very focused, they are very aware of what needs to be done. If you want to be a good player around the world then you have to be able to play all over the world.”
Pothas does understand that the West Indies team will not overcome their deficiencies overnight. He is rather keen to find out if his charges show any signs of improvement.
“You know, you are not going to flick a switch and all of a sudden become a winning team – there’s a process to that. Of course it's going to play a role and it will be very interesting to see what progress we've made.”
