I don't judge myself by trophies: Mashrafe

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza does not find himself to be so mean that he would judge his leadership by trophies. During the press-conference ahead of Bangladesh’s Asia Cup, the fast-bowler admitted that his team do need a trophy to inspire those coming into the game and believes that the Tigers will win a trophy in near future, if not on this very occasion.
Bangladesh have so far featured in five multi-nation tournament finals, including two Asia Cup finals, and have managed to win none. However, being Bangladesh’s leading ODI wicket-taker and also the most successful captain for the team in the format, Mashrafe does not judge his career with the outcome of a particular tournament final.
“First of all, I don’t consider myself so mean that I would judge myself by trophies. And secondly, I don’t play cricket for trophies. I can say that this trophy is very important for Bangladesh.
“I believe that Bangladesh will get it [a major trophy] one day on another platform [if not this time]. If we get a trophy, it will boost those who are now playing in the under-16s or the under-19s.
“You can say that Bangladesh needs a trophy, but not necessarily right now,” Mashrafe said candidly.
Under the stewardship of Mashrafe, the Bangladesh team developed a winning habit by challenging the big teams in world cricket. Despite undergoing seven surgeries on his legs, his presence on the field itself motivates many. So losing yet another final will truly not take away anything from the inspirational character he has been for the Tigers and Mashrafe certainly understands that.
More than titles and other labels of supremacy it is the game that matters to Mashrafe. And that is exactly how the Bangladesh skipper goes on to make the game more enjoyable.
