Despite being one of Bangladesh's most consistent performers in the ODI format and delivering a strong performance in the recent West Indies series, Mahmudullah was absent from the lineup in the 6-wicket loss to India. His potential return could influence key selection decisions as the Tigers prepare for the critical encounter in Rawalpindi.

"We'll find out today if Mahmudullah will play," said Simmons during the pre-match press conference. "He has a fitness test and will join the team practice. After that, we’ll see if he is fit enough to make the XI."

With Bangladesh facing elimination if they lose to New Zealand and India beats Pakistan, changes to the playing XI are likely.

The team management is considering bringing back Mahmudullah, which would require dropping a batter to maintain balance. Additionally, young pacer Nahid Rana could return to bolster the pace attack.

Simmons emphasized that the team’s balance will largely depend on Mahmudullah's fitness.

"We are considering different options. First, we need to assess Mahmudullah’s fitness and analyze the pitch. Then, we'll try to bring balance to the side. We’ll have a clearer idea after today’s practice and make a final decision on the XI in the evening," he explained.

With Bangladesh needing a win to stay alive in the tournament, the pressure is on the team. However, Simmons believes that in a competition featuring the world's top eight teams, every match comes with its own pressure.

The match against New Zealand is not just a battle for survival but also a test of character for Bangladesh, as they aim to keep their Champions Trophy hopes alive.
