Under a relatively new coaching setup, the Bangladesh national team are preparing for the Asia Cup that is going to start on September 15, in the UAE. New head coach Steve Rhodes has introduced an array of new drills in the team’s training camp, including performing in match-like situations.
Bangladesh pacer Abu Hider, on Tuesday [September 4], talked about match-like scenario practice sessions. According to him, such pressure-situations help the players to prepare better and boost their confidence.

“It has been a great practice session. Because these situations are often seen in the match. You have 7 or 9 runs to defend in an over and you have to tackle that situation. This is also a challenge for the batsmen to take 9 or 10 runs in an over. If we do this practice, then our confidence level will increase and we will understand how to deal with this situation.
“For example, I was given a situation where I need to defend 9 runs in an over. I got hit for a boundary in the first ball and planned on how to defend the remaining five runs. At that time, we have to think about using yorkers and change of pace, and we’ve been practicing that,” said Hider.
There are also cricketers other than the members of the Asia Cup squad in the training camp. Pacers like Khaled Ahmed and Shroiful Islam have also been practicing alongside the national team bowlers and are being guided to use the physical advantages that they have.
“The ‘master’ [Courtney Walsh] has arrived today. We haven’t talked with him yet. Everyone is talking about using wrist. The new pacers we have – Shoriful, Khaled – their height is good. They are being told how they can deliver better bouncers using their wrist,” Hider concluded.
