Local players urged that the controversial players-by-choice should be abolished in the upcoming edition of the Dhaka Premier League [DPL] as they are facing financial problems. The controversial players-by-choice transfer system was re-introduced in the las edition of the country's prestigious club-based 50-over tournament.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB] introduced the lottery-based transfer system for the first time in 2013 and announced that they would not use the system further but made a u-turn on the decision for the 2015-16 edition of the tournament. Clubs wanted the return of the process due to exorbitant payment demands from the top players during that time but the process was shelved for the next edition of the tournament.

However, clubs failed to keep their commitment on many instances as per the guideline of Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis [CCDM] suggested that clubs will pay 50 percent of the remuneration within the given deadline ahead of the tournament. 25 percent of the fee will have to be paid during the tournament and the rest of 25 percent will be paid after the tournament, and the payment- system will be the same for the players who will be retained.

“The thing is, we opted for player-by-choice avoid such issues. And we’re still having these problems. We have been coming here for three months now,” Alok Kapali, who played for Brothers Union, said in a remorse tone.

“We again have to think whether players-by-choice will be good for us or not. We used to play under a contract before. Back then we didn’t use to have this problems.”

There are many players who do not play in the cash-rich Bangladesh Premier League and many other tournaments; hence, DPL is the only way for them to give monetary support to their families and it is undoubtedly disturbing for them when their payments aren’t cleared in due time.

DPL has a history of issues regarding the players’ non-payment and Brothers Union has added to it with their recent activities. According to Kapali, one-fourth of their salaries are yet to be paid.

“We have listened to whatever they said till now. We just want them to pay the outstanding salaries in due time [as per the board’s instructions]. All of us have 25 per cent of our salaries unpaid,” Kapali told the reporters.
