BCB to launch investigation into Sabbir's social-media fight

Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman is once again at the center of controversy after allegedly abusing two fans on Facebook. The Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB] will soon launch a probe into the allegations.

The incident took place after the second ODI of Bangladesh’s ongoing series against West Indies. A fan posted a status satirizing Sabbir’s current form and another fan tagged the batsman on to the post. Both fans then received threatening messages from an account which supposedly belongs to the cricketer himself.

The alleged social media account (Sabbir Rahman Roman), which has more than 90,000 followers, was deactivated after the incident was reported to the BCB.

“We are looking into the matter. The board would take appropriate action after looking into the possible breach in conduct. Players, especially national players, are given definitive guidelines on how to behave with fans and they have been told that they must be very careful when interacting with the public on social media,” BCB chief executive Nizamuddin was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“Since it is out in the public and when it has come to the board's knowledge, if such a breach has occurred it will be referred to the disciplinary committee and appropriate action taken.”

Sabbir is currently serving a six-month domestic ban for assaulting a fan during a National Cricket League [NCL] match. He was also stripped of the central contract after that incident.

The right-hander was penalized 30 percent of his BPL contract money (TK 12 lakh) in 2016. He had taken a female guest to his hotel room, breaching an off-field code of conduct.

Sabbir was reportedly dropped from Bangladesh’s third T20I against Afghanistan last month because of getting involved in a physical altercation with his teammate, Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

The 26-year-old has already earned himself the unwanted tag of Bangladesh Cricket’s ‘bad boy’ as he continues to make headlines for wrong reasons.
