Angelo Mathews has returned to Sri Lanka's ODI side to once again lead them in the upcoming series against the Proteas. Although the all-rounder was given captaincy of the team in white-ball cricket back in January this year, he has been able to perform the leadership role only once in an ODI clash against Zimbabwe before injury forced him out of action.

Sri Lanka’s stand-in limited-over skipper, Dinesh Chandimal is yet to serve a four-ODI ban after sitting out the last two Tests and hence will miss the 50-over series against South Africa.

Other players that have been excluded from the ODI side are Asela Gunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Pradeep, Shehan Madushanka, Wanidu Hasaranga, and Danushka Gunthilaka, who has been handed a suspension, pending inquiry, by the Sri Lanka Cricket.

Kasun Rajitha, Shehan Jayasuriya, and Dasun Shanaka have been included in the squad alongside uncapped Prabath Jayasuriya. Rajitha, who has represented his country in two Tests and three T20Is, could earn his ODI debut in the upcoming series.

Despite being punished with a one-year suspended ban last week, Jeffrey Vandersay has been named among the players on standby. Gunathilaka too has made it to the list of standbys along with Isuru Udana and Nishan Peiris.

The first ODI between South Africa and the islanders will be held on Sunday (July 29). With the five-ODI series ending on August 12, Sri Lanka will take on the same opponents in a one-off T20I on August 14.
