India have now confirmed a share of the spoils with their third successive ODI-win against the Proteas in the ongoing series. South Africa were handed a 124-run defeat after losing the first two matches by six wickets and nine wickets, respectively. India are now leading the 6-ODI series by 3-0.

Winning the toss at Newlands, South Africa decided to bowl first. India lost the wicket of Rohit Sharma before posting any runs. Then Indian skipper Virat Kohli stitched a 140-run stand with opener Shikhar Dhawan.

Dhawan clubbed 76 runs off 63 deliveries before getting out by Duminy. Following his exit, India lost wickets at regular intervals with no middle-order batsman scoring more than 15 runs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar helped Kohli by building a 67-run partnership where his contribution was just 16 runs. Virat Kohli’s one-man show lifted the Indian total past 300 runs. He picked up his 34th ODI century and played an unbeaten innings of 160 runs as India registered 303 runs for 6 wickets.

Duminy got 2 wickets for the Proteas as Kagiso Rabada, Chris Morris, Imran Tahir, and Andile Phehlukwayo bagged one wicket apiece.

Virat’s knock of 160* is the highest knock by an Indian captain away from home after Kapil Dev’s 175* in 1983 World Cup. Kohli’s innings also went past Sachin Tendulkar’s innings of 152 runs to become the highest individual innings for India on the South African soil.

While chasing the daunting total, South Africa lost their first wicket on 1 run. Aiden Markram’s 32 and JP Duminy’s 51 were of no use to the hosting nation as the rest of the batsmen could not manage to play a decent innings.

Jasprit Bumrah gave India a breakthrough as Amla got trapped lbw. He later dismissed David Miller on 25 runs.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav plucked out 4 wickets each strangle the African batting line-up. These two spinners have taken their tally to 21 wickets in the three ODIs against the rainbow nation.

The absence of the likes of AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis was highly noticeable as South Africa were restricted to 179 runs losing all their wickets. Virat Kohli got the Man of the Match yet again for his second consecutive century in this tour which helped India get on the opponents’ nerves from the very beginning.

The next encounter between the two teams will take place on 10th February in Johannesburg, where India won their only match in the 3-Test series last month.
