Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza was fined 20 percent of his match fee while Sri Lanka opener Danushka Gunathilaka was reprimanded for his actions during the ODI tri-series final on Saturday. The Tigers lost the final match by 79 runs.

Both of the players were found guilty of breaching Article 2.1.7 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

The charges were leveled by on-field umpires Chettithody Shamshuddin and Sharfuddoula, third umpire Bruce Oxenford, and fourth umpire Anisur Rahman.

The two players were given one demerit point each for their respective actions. There will be no need for a formal hearing as they accepted the offenses and sanctions proposed.

The incident involving Mortaza happened in the sixth over of Sri Lanka’s innings when he dismissed Sri Lanka opener Kusal Mendis and ran towards him while yelling loudly and looking directly at the batsman. Mortaza yelled loudly and also stared at Mendis, which “could have provoked an aggressive reaction”.

The Gunathilaka incident occurred when he shouted something at Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal after he was dismissed in the sixth over. The send-off resulted in Tamim to turning around and staring at Gunathilaka.

The Bangladesh ODI skipper had received another demerit point in the past during England’s tour of Bangladesh in 2016.

Demerit Points to remain on a player’s disciplinary record for twenty-four (24) months from their imposition following which they will be erased.
