India edge ahead after Kohli's record-breaking innings

India will resume day-4 as favorites, as South Africa still
need 224 runs to win the final clash of a 3-Test series. The Proteas are
already a wicket down after the end of the 3rd day. Umpires chose to end play 19 minutes before scheduled stumps on day three because of concerns over the Johannesburg pitch.
A total of ten wicket fell in the game on Friday after India continued
their innings from 49/1. Philander took his second wicket of the innings by
dismissing KL Rahul who could not add any runs to his 2nd day’s score
of 16. The South African pacer ended the Indian batting innings as well by
bagging his third wicket, as he got Jasprit Bumrah out.
Cheteshwar Pujara was out scoring only 1 run as he spliced
off a catch to Faf du Plessis following a delivery from Morne Morkel. The quick
later scalped two more important wickets by dismissing Ajinkya Rahane, and Bhuvneshwar
Kumar. Opener Murali Vijay made 25 runs before Kagiso Rabada picked up his wicket.
Together Rahane and Bhuvneshwar built a 55-run partnership,
the highest stand in the 2nd innings. After Virat Kohli’s dismissal
following his crucial knock of 41 runs, Rahane stood firm despite Hardik Pandya’s
early departure and was accompanied by Bhuvneshwar who has played a vital role
with the bat throughout the series. Kohli was bowled out by Rabada, while Pandya was out caught and bowled by the same pacer.
Rahane was out playing the highest individual innings of 48
runs for his team, to leave India at 203 for 7. Bhuvneshwar then stitched a stand
of 35 runs with Mohammad Shami.

Shami’s Test match cameo of 27 from 28 deliveries came to an end as he was out caught off a short delivery. His wicket was picked up by Lungisani Ngidi. Soon after Shami’s exit, Bhuvneshwar Kumar got caught behind. Ishant Sharma added 7 more runs to the total and remained unbeaten while Jasprit Bumrah got out hoisting the ball to the mid-on.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli overtook MS Dhoni's record of 3454 runs as Indian skipper. Kohli has now scored more runs than any other Indian Test captain.
India have registered a total of 247 runs to set a 241-run target for the Proteas. South Africa lost their first wicket on 5 runs. Their opener Aiden Markram was dismissed by Mohammad Shami before the hosts ended the day with the score of 17/1.
342 runs chased down by Australia in 1977 is the highest successful chase by any opponents against India outside India which is followed by a 215-run successful pursuit by New Zealand in 1998.
With the series already in their pocket, South Africa will still need a lot of effort to turn this game in
their favor against the Indian bowling line-up which has been the only
consistent department of the sub-continental team throughout this series.
