Teenager called up for Bangladesh: is it the right decision?

You see, talent always finds a way to shine. It is a given.
With a combination of hard-work and a bit of luck, there is always recognition.
However, it has to be earned first, otherwise the value of it is never truly
understood.
Bangladesh cricket team are on the rise. They might have been
humiliated by the Lankan at home, but the truth is that the Bangladesh team are
not minnows anymore. They can’t be trifled with; they are no longer the
punching bag of the top echelons.
There is a wave of talents being produced by the country and
it is only natural. After all, the BCB are the fourth richest board in the
world. The number of people that watch the sport has played a significant role
in the production of talents.
It is a simple logic, really. When a country’s population
watches one sport religiously and treats the players like heroes, the children
of that nation also aspire to be seen in that light. As a result, more cricket
is played on the streets.
And that’s where the journey begins.
This is why there is a plethora of talented players in the
youth ranks of Bangladesh—and one of them is Nayeem Hasan. The youngster is a
17-year-old off-spinner that has been picked up by the national team for the
Test series against Sri Lanka.
While this might sound great for the youngster, it probably
isn’t in the hindsight.

One of the greatest problems of Bangladesh is timing. The selectors
don’t seem to realize this just yet, but rushing a player to the international
scene rarely ever works.
Almost every nation that has gone through the development
phase like Bangladesh are now have done similar mistakes. India did the same
with Abhimanyu Mithun, R.P Singh and Irfan Pathan. Australia, too, were
culprits of it with the early rushing of James Pattinson.
It is not that Bangladesh themselves don’t have examples.
Taskin Ahmed was rushed to the scene in his teenage and so was Mustafizur
Rahman. The latter might be an exception given that he is blessed with supreme
talent, but even then, rushing physically under-developed bowlers in the most
gruesome format of the game always takes a toll on the body.
They come in with a bang as the opponents aren’t entirely aware
of their prowess. After a while, rivals begin to find out their weaknesses and
then the said bowlers loses himself to obscurity.
Nayeem Hasan might be a great talent, but having played only
a handful of domestic games—where he didn’t entirely rip through any batting
line-ups—calling him to the squad for the Lankan series was premature to say
the least.
Hasan might as well go on to be the hero of the Test series
comprising of two games, but his selection risks hindering his long-term
growth. Teenage years are the ones where a player not only develops his skills,
but also mental strength.
And playing in the international circuit requires more of
the latter than the former. If, somehow, he gets spanked by the big boys, his
confidence will take a huge hit—something that could push him back for years.
The selectors should realize that rushing bowlers in form
never helps, not in the long-term. The thought-process should always be about
the next 10 years and not the next 10 months. For Nayeem Hasan, we can only
hope that he has a good outing as it would make him more confident.
But regardless of how he does against Sri Lanka, he should be allowed to develop properly by playing in the domestic circuit before being called up again by the Tigers.
