Angelo Mathews has been renamed as the captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team ahead of the tri-nation series in Bangladesh. He resigned from captaincy following their ODI series defeat from Zimbabwe in 2017.

Mathews talked about the coach and said, “I know Hathurusingha for last ten years. He has a personal style of working. He is not strict, but he can be, at times. He has just started. This is his first series, but he knows our cricketers well. He kept in touch with us. We are delighted to work with him,”

“I am happy to be back in captaincy. Although I didn’t expect it, I am happy to have returned. I am looking forward to new challenges,” Mathews said about the captaincy.

When asked if removing Thisara Perera from captaincy was any sort of injustice to him [Perera], Mathews replied, “I have to ask the selectors”

“We have to perform on the precise day. The team that will score more runs, will win. Bangladesh have been brilliant in the last two and a half years. Zimbabwe are also playing better in recent times. A number of good cricketers have returned in their team. So, this is going to be a competitive tournament.” Mathews stated ahead of the series.

Sri Lanka did not have a great time in 2017. They lost 23 of their 29 ODIs. About their previous failures, Mathews said, “Past is past. We don’t want to remain upset about that. We are looking forward to new challenges. This will be competitive and challenging. We can definitely turn around.”
